Sharing three workout playlists for you today!
Music makes the workout. And studies show that listening to music while you exercise can help you work harder and perform better too.
I spend a lot of time searching for the right songs for the group fitness classes I teach, and today, I thought it would be fun to share some of my music with you.
For the first 10 years or so of my group fitness career, I taught primarily pre-choreographed programs or used pre-mixed music. But these days, I create all of my own playlists for all of the classes I teach. And now that I make my own, I could never go back to pre-mixed tunes.
To find, organize and play music for my classes, I use Spotify. And if I hear a great class-worthy song anywhere during the course of my day, I usually screenshot it on my phone and research it later. Some playlists take longer to make than others (I’m looking at you, barre classes), and some are super easy to piece together.
I hope these playlists can be just the right pump-up you need for your next sweat session.
Let’s get to the music: Now, you should be able to play these songs through a free Spotify account. Or, if you prefer to listen to music in another way, I’ve also pasted the name of the song and the artist for you. Please enjoy …
1. Running, walking or cardio workout playlist
This playlist runs 1 hour and 34 minutes, and it’s a pretty fast-paced collection. Moving to the beat of this playlist will definitely keep your heart-rate up, so that’s why I think it’s ideal for running, walking or cardio.
I’ve used this playlist for teaching Shred classes at Life Time, and we hardly ever stop moving in that class. While there’s a cool-down at the end of this playlist, this one stays up with beats from about 126 BPM (beats per minute) to 136 BPM or so. Also, I usually don’t choose the edited versions of songs, so make sure you listen to this one away from little ears.
You can access this cardio workout playlist here.

Strength or weightlifting workout playlist
This playlist runs 44 minutes and has very strong beats, so you can lift to the beat of the music if you like.
I’ve used this playlist in my LIFT Barbell Strength classes at Life Time, and we always move to the beat in those classes. The BPM varies throughout this playlist, and you’ll find a mixture of hard-hitting EDM (electronic dance music), some country, some pop, some hip hop and even some rock. Although I have genres of music I like better than others, I’ve also found that diverse playlists are the best playlists.

Walking, Pilates or barre workout playlist
This playlist runs 53 minutes, and it’s a fun one. If you listen to it, you’ll find that it’s a journey from beginning to end, comprised of a variety of dance and pop tunes.
I’ve used this playlist in my Life Barre classes at Life Time. It starts with an easy and welcoming opener, it moves into a little cardio peak, followed by some solid beats for light weights and movement in the middle. Then, it closes out with some songs for core work and a wrap-up cool-down too (thank you, Taylor Swift). I love creating barre-class playlists, and this one was a crowd favorite, with a mix of new hits and old ones too.
