Today, April 19, is Cat Lady Day. Let’s celebrate!
In case you didn’t know:
This annual, unofficial holiday celebrates the bond between women and their cats, reclaiming the term “cat lady” to represent independence and compassion rather than old stereotypes. It is a day to shower cats with affection, treats, and extra playtime.

Cat Lady Day was originally created by CatCon founder Susan Michals in 2017, in order to to challenge outdated, negative stereotypes. We women with cats tend to get a lot of bad press. Remember when the current vice president of the US called us “weird cat ladies” as an insult?
The cat lady title is often used to describe a woman who prefers cats to humans, men in particular. To some, “cat lady” is considered a social stigma intended to shame women for not adhering to traditional family structures, but in reality it’s just another sexist, ageist stereotype.

Cat Women are not alone in their love for cats. Cat Men have finally come out in public, declaring themselves cat lovers as well.

Some call us “crazy,” but how is it crazy to love and care for a number of cats?
Thankfully, our cats don’t care what other humans call us. As long as we give them plenty of love, play, and food in a timely manner, they are wonderful companions accompanying us through life’s challenges with open, feline hearts.
How to celebrate Cat Lady Day?
The obvious answer is to spoil your cats! Aways. But also, be loud and proud. Be bold and courageous. Cat love is not a stigma but a blessing. Tell the world how much your cat family means to you!
And you can always ready a cat related cozy mystery from my Crazy Cat Lady series, which features cat shelter volunteer Lynley Cannon, a sixty-something cat lady (not quite crazy yet) who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip. I recently published the first three books in a eBook bundle if you’re not familiar with the series. The most recent is book 12, Cold Case Cat. Books need not be read in order to enjoy them, just pick a plot that sounds enticing, and go from there.
Now, go play with your cats~
